At a brickworks on the Altham estate near Accrington, grinding and pressing clay at volume, the dust extraction over the grinding mill and the press had lost capture and silica-laden clay dust was drifting across the plant. We measured capture at the mill, the screens and the press, checked the ducting and the filter, and found a fan below duty and a choked filter dragging the run. We set out the remedial action, and re-tested to confirm the control before certifying.
At an engineering unit on the Whitebirk estate near Accrington, the weld-fume arms and mist extraction over the machining had lost capture and the shop was hazing by mid-shift.
