Local exhaust ventilation (LEV) captures dust, fume, mist and vapour at the point they are created - grinding, welding, woodworking, spraying, soldering, and many food and industrial processes. It is one of the main ways employers control exposure to substances that damage the lungs. But an LEV system drifts out of tune: filters load, ducts partly block, fans wear and hoods get moved. When that happens it can look like it is working while no longer protecting anyone.

Does each hood capture the contaminant at source? We check capture and face velocities at the working position, where it actually matters.
Is air moving through the ducting and air cleaner as designed? We measure airflows and pressures and look for blockages, leaks and loaded filters.

Under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH), employers must control exposure to hazardous substances. Where LEV is the control, regulation 9 requires it to be maintained in efficient working order and given a thorough examination and test at least every 14 months - and more often for certain higher-risk processes. HSE guidance HSG258 sets out how it should be done.

Legal compliance. The 14-month thorough examination and test is a legal requirement under COSHH, and the records must be kept for five years. An HSE inspector can ask to see them.
