Saltash works for a living beyond the gateway trade. Its industry gathers on the Moorlands and Carkeel estates on the edge of town, where chemical-processing, engineering and food units sit alongside the bodyshops and finishing trades that serve south-east Cornwall. Every one of them raises something a worker should not breathe - process vapour, weld fume, oil mist, wood dust or solvent.

At a family-owned chemical-processing plant on the Carkeel estate, the extraction over the blending and decanting points had dropped off and vapour was reaching the floor. We measured capture at each hood, checked the ducting, the scrubber and the discharge, and found a fan below duty and a partly blocked take-off. We set out the remedial action, and re-tested to confirm the control before certifying.
At a Saltash joinery the dust extraction served several machines off one system, and the run to the furthest machine had lost transport velocity.
