Duct cleaning - access challenges
Long horizontal duct runs pose a particular problem for cleaning: they are exactly where dirt and debris settle most, and exactly where getting access to clean is hardest. That combination - the most in need of cleaning, the hardest to reach - is why long horizontal runs are so often the neglected part of a system. Here is the access problem explained, and what it takes to deal with it.
The short answer
Long horizontal duct runs combine two problems that make them the most under-cleaned part of many systems. First, dirt settles most in horizontal runs: in a horizontal duct, gravity pulls settling dust and debris down onto the bottom of the duct, where it accumulates - whereas in vertical runs it tends to be carried through. So the horizontal runs are where the build-up is heaviest. Second, they are the hardest to access: a long horizontal run, often high up in a ceiling void, is difficult to reach along its length, and cleaning can only reach so far into a duct from each access point - so a long run needs multiple access points along it, which are often not there. The result is that the part of the system with the most build-up is the part hardest to clean, so it gets neglected - unless enough access is provided along the run to reach and clean its whole length. Dealing with it means planning the access to match where the dirt actually collects.
Where the dirt settles
The first half of the problem is that long horizontal duct runs are exactly where dirt and debris settle most. In any ventilation or extract duct, the moving air carries dust, debris and - in kitchen systems - grease along with it; but that material tends to drop out of the airflow and settle where conditions allow, and a horizontal run is where it settles most. In a horizontal duct, gravity pulls the settling material down onto the bottom of the duct, where it collects and builds up along the length of the run. The airflow may not be enough to keep the heavier material moving along a horizontal stretch, so it accumulates on the duct floor, layer by layer.
This is different from vertical runs, where settling material tends to be carried up and through by the airflow, or falls back rather than accumulating along a length. It is the horizontal geometry that lets dirt settle and stay: the flat bottom of the duct gives the material somewhere to rest, and gravity holds it there. So the long horizontal runs of a system are typically where the build-up is heaviest - the place the most dirt, debris or grease has collected. This makes them, in principle, the most important part to clean, because they hold the most accumulation - and in kitchen systems, the most grease and so the most fire risk. So the horizontal runs are where the cleaning is most needed. The problem is that they are also where it is hardest to do.
Why they are hard to reach
The second half of the problem is access - and long horizontal runs are among the hardest parts of a system to reach and clean. Two things make them difficult. First, their length: cleaning reaches only a certain distance into a duct from each access point, so a long run cannot be cleaned from one opening - it needs access points spaced along its length so that the whole run can be reached, section by section. A long horizontal run without enough access points has stretches in the middle, far from any opening, that simply cannot be reached to clean. Second, their location: long horizontal runs often sit high up in ceiling voids, above rooms, in the parts of a building that are themselves awkward and time-consuming to get to, adding to the difficulty.
So the very runs where the dirt collects most are the runs hardest to get at - long, often high up, and reachable only through access points that need to be spaced along them. And a common reality is that these runs do not have enough access points: systems are frequently installed with too few, or with the access concentrated at the accessible ends and lacking along the difficult middle stretches. So the long horizontal run, heavy with settled dirt, may have stretches that no access point reaches, which cannot be cleaned as the system stands. This is the crux of the access problem: the geometry that makes horizontal runs collect dirt also makes them hard to reach, and the access needed to overcome that is often not provided - so the runs go under-cleaned.
The neglected combination
Put the two halves together and the problem is clear: long horizontal runs are the part of the system that most needs cleaning and is hardest to clean - a combination that leads to them being neglected. Because they are hard to reach, they tend to get less attention in cleaning, or to have stretches that are missed entirely; and because they collect the most dirt, that neglect matters more there than anywhere. So the result is often that the heaviest build-up in the system sits in the part that is cleaned least thoroughly - a quietly accumulating problem in the runs that are out of sight and out of reach. In a kitchen extract system, that means the heaviest grease, and so the greatest fire risk, may be in exactly the runs the cleaning struggles to reach.
This is why long horizontal runs are so often the weak point of a system's cleaning - not through carelessness, but because the access problem makes them genuinely hard to clean fully. A clean that addresses the accessible parts well can still leave the long horizontal runs under-done, if the access to reach them is not there. And because these runs are hidden and awkward, the shortfall is not obvious - the system looks cleaned, while the heaviest build-up remains in the runs no one could reach. So the neglected long horizontal run is a common and consequential blind spot: the place with the most to clean and the least means to clean it. Recognising it is the first step to dealing with it, because it points to what the solution has to address - the access.
What it takes to deal with it
Dealing with the long-horizontal-run access problem comes down to providing enough access to reach and clean the whole run - matching the access to where the dirt actually collects. This means access points spaced along the length of the run, closely enough that their cleaning reach overlaps and no stretch is left unreachable, rather than access only at the convenient ends. Where a run lacks adequate access, the solution is to fit additional access points along it, so the whole length can be reached and the settled dirt removed. This is exactly the kind of access provision that good duct design plans in from the start - and that a survey often finds lacking in existing systems.
It also means the cleaning itself has to be done thoroughly along the whole run, not just at the reachable ends - working through the access points section by section to clean the entire length, including the hard-to-reach middle stretches where the build-up is often heaviest. So dealing with the problem is partly about the access being there (fitting panels where needed) and partly about the cleaning being done properly through that access (reaching the whole run). Where both are addressed, the long horizontal runs can be cleaned as thoroughly as the rest of the system, and the heaviest build-up removed rather than left. So the answer to the access problem is access matched to the dirt: enough access points along the run, and cleaning that uses them to reach the whole length. That turns the most-neglected part of the system into a properly cleaned one - which, given that it holds the most build-up, is where thorough cleaning matters most.
