Duct cleaning - air quality
A gym or leisure centre puts an unusually heavy load on its air: lots of people exercising hard, generating heat, moisture and odour, often in a busy, enclosed space - and sometimes with a pool adding more humidity still. Keeping the air fresh under that load takes ventilation that can cope, and keeping it working. Here is how to manage air quality in a gym or leisure centre.
The short answer
A gym or leisure centre generates a heavy air-quality load, because people exercising hard produce a lot of heat, moisture (sweat and heavy breathing), carbon dioxide (from exertion), and odour - all concentrated in a busy space, and often added to by a pool's humidity where there is one. So the air quality can degrade fast if the ventilation cannot keep up: the space becomes hot, humid, stuffy and smelly, with high CO2 and the risk of condensation and mould from the moisture. Managing the air quality means having ventilation sized for this heavy load - enough fresh air to clear the CO2, odour and heat, and enough moisture removal to control the humidity - and keeping that ventilation working, because a system that cannot cope, or that has degraded, lets the air quality fall. A heavy load on the air
A gym or leisure centre is unusual in how heavily it loads the air, because of what happens in it: people exercising hard, which generates a lot of the things ventilation has to deal with. Exercising people produce heat (raising the temperature), moisture (through sweat and heavy breathing, raising the humidity), carbon dioxide (breathed out heavily during exertion, far more than at rest), and odour (from bodies working hard). And this happens with many people at once, in a busy, often enclosed space - so the loads are concentrated. A busy gym at peak is a room full of people generating heat, moisture, CO2 and smell all at once, which is a heavy load on the air.
Where there is a pool - as in many leisure centres - the load is heavier still, because a pool adds a lot of humidity through evaporation, plus the chemical smells of the water treatment. What poor air quality causes

Ventilation sized for the load
Managing the air quality in a gym or leisure centre starts with having ventilation sized for the heavy load - enough capacity to clear the heat, CO2, odour and moisture that the facility generates at its busiest. This means adequate fresh air: bringing in and distributing enough fresh air to dilute and remove the CO2 and odour and keep the air fresh under the peak occupancy, when the load is highest. A gym's ventilation has to be sized for a room full of exercising people, not a lightly-occupied space - so it needs substantial fresh-air capacity to keep up with the peak CO2 and odour load. Undersized ventilation cannot clear a busy gym's air, so it goes stuffy and smelly.
It also means moisture control - removing the moisture the exercising people (and any pool) generate, to control the humidity and prevent condensation and mould. This is partly done by the ventilation (extracting the humid air), and, especially with a pool, often by dedicated dehumidification, which pool halls typically need. Having ventilation sized for the load is only half of managing a gym's air quality - the other half is keeping that ventilation working and clean, because a system that has degraded cannot deliver its capacity. Ventilation systems lose performance if not maintained: the ductwork accumulates dust and dirt, restricting the airflow; the fans wear; the filters load. A gym's ventilation, moving a lot of air heavily, is worked hard, so it needs maintaining to keep performing - and if it degrades, its capacity to handle the load falls, so the air quality suffers even though the system was adequately sized. So keeping the ventilation maintained and clean is essential to it actually delivering the capacity it was designed for.
