LEV testing - operator training
A well-designed, well-maintained, properly tested LEV can still fail to protect anyone - if the people using it use it wrong. Extraction only works when the operator positions the hood correctly, turns the system on, and works within its capture. Training operators to use LEV properly is the part that turns a good system into actual protection, and it is easy to overlook.

LEV depends on the operator using it correctly - so training is part of making it work. A system can be well designed, maintained and tested, and still fail to protect anyone if the operator does not position an adjustable hood close to the source, does not switch the system on, works outside the capture zone, or defeats the extraction by how they stand or work. Other failures are just as ordinary. Simply not switching the system on, or turning it off to reduce noise or draught, leaves the process uncontrolled entirely. Working in a position that puts the operator's own body between the source and the hood, or bending over the work so their head is in the rising plume before the extraction catches it, exposes them despite the system running. Blocking a hood, or defeating an enclosure by propping it open for convenience, undoes the design. None of these is exotic - they are the small, human ways a good system gets used in a way that stops it working. And crucially, they are all addressable by the operator understanding how to use the system, which is what training provides.

Effective operator training covers a few connected things. First, understanding: why the LEV is there and what it protects them from - because an operator who grasps that the extraction is guarding their lungs from a real hazard is far more likely to use it properly than one who sees it as an inconvenient bit of kit. Understanding the purpose motivates the correct use. Second, correct use: how to position and use the system properly - keeping the source within the capture zone, keeping their head out of the plume, using enclosures and hoods as intended, and always having the system running when the process is.
Third, recognising problems: how to tell when the LEV is not working as it should - a weakening pull, visible dust, a smell that should be extracted - and what to do about it, namely report it so it can be fixed rather than carry on regardless. An operator who can spot that the extraction has degraded is an early-warning system for faults that develop between examinations. So training makes the operator both a correct user of the system and a watchful pair of eyes on it. Together these turn the operator from a potential weak link into an active part of the control - using the system right, and helping keep it working.
